Let me be real with you—I don’t love when people show up unannounced. I’m picky about what I serve, and I like everything to be perfect. I want my house not just clean but disinfected. Obviously, when you get a last-minute call (or worse, a knock at the door), you don’t have time to deep-clean bathrooms or perfectly stage your living room.
That said, I’ve learned a few tricks to make sure I’m never caught off guard when someone shows up out of the blue.
Stay “Guest-Ready” at Home
I keep up with housework daily so I’m not scrambling if the doorbell rings. That doesn’t mean obsessively scrubbing 24/7—it just means building in small habits:
- Fluff the pillows, fold blankets, and tidy up after TV time.
- Run a robot vacuum (I use mine daily—Amazon finds!) so floors are always fresh.
- Wipe down counters and load the dishwasher after meals.
- Bathrooms? No mess left behind. Quick spot checks keep them ready.
This way, your home always feels welcoming.
Always Have Something to Serve
I cannot stand the idea of handing someone just a glass of tap water (nothing wrong with it, but it doesn’t look very good). I always keep a few items on hand that don’t expire quickly and can be pulled together in minutes:
- Garlic-stuffed olives (Costco staple)
- Whole salami stick (keeps longer than sliced)
- Mini Spanish Chorizo Snacks (Goikoa makes great ones—just open and serve)
- Crackers (always unopened and in date)
- Small wheel of brie (buy one when it’s on sale and stash it)
- Dried fruit mix (I love the premium coconut–mango–strawberry blend from T&T Supermarket)
- Pistachios or almonds (always check with your guests for allergies first)
With these basics, you can throw together a quick charcuterie-style plate that looks intentional and tastes delicious.
Don’t Forget the Drinks
Food is important, but drinks seal the deal. Always try to keep a few options on hand so you’re never caught scrambling:
- A bottle of Pinot Grigio or another easy white wine
- Coke
- Diet Coke (some people live for it)
- Sparkling water
- Beer
It’s not about being fancy—it’s about having something to offer beyond a glass of tap water.
The Takeaway
Unexpected guests don’t have to be stressful. If you stay on top of daily tidying and stock a few easy entertaining staples, you’ll never be caught off guard. In a matter of minutes, you can welcome someone into your home with a plate that looks like you planned it, and a drink that feels thoughtful—even if you only had five minutes’ notice.
Because let’s be honest—perfectionists like us don’t just want people to feel welcome. We want them to leave impressed.
