Beautiful Tables, Simple Cleanup: My Secrets for Entertaining Season

Can you believe it? Entertaining season is already knocking on the door. Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas may feel “far enough away,” but in the grand scheme of things, they’re practically tomorrow.

Whenever I’m hosting, I put so much thought into the details—decor, atmosphere, the menu, the way the whole experience comes together. But here’s the honest truth: by the time the event actually starts, I’m usually a little tired. That’s why I’ve learned to simplify where I can—without compromising on the look or feel I’m after.

These days, I lean on serving dishes that do double duty. If I can prep, serve, pop a lid on, and tuck it straight into the fridge afterward—no mountain of dishes waiting for me—that’s a win. Function meets presentation. And yes, I’m unapologetically a fan of dishwasher-friendly everything.

There used to be a time when people brought out the fine china and polished silverware, and while there’s something undeniably beautiful about that tradition, it’s just not realistic for the way many of us entertain today. Instead, I find the middle ground.

The dinnerware on the market now is gorgeous and practical. My everyday plates are simple white Corelle with a detailed scalloped edge. Pop a pretty charger underneath and suddenly they’re event-ready—elegant without being fragile. They’re tough to break and (best of all) completely dishwasher-friendly. The same goes for glassware: as much as I love the sparkle of crystal, I’m not handwashing 24 wine glasses at midnight. I stick to durable, shatter-resistant pieces whenever I can.

Some of my most-used serving pieces are actually CorningWare. The French White line is a workhorse disguised as something elegant. You can serve potatoes in it, meats in the larger ones, and they look great right on the table. Honestly, those dishes are worth their weight in gold—you can cook in them, refrigerate them, pop on the glass lid, and some even come with a rubber lid for storage. They’re absolutely part of my “go-to” entertaining armoire.

I used to break out my Dublin Crystal for a lot of gatherings, and it did look beautiful. But it was heavy to wash and a bit nerve-wracking to use when the night got lively. These days, I save it for truly elegant, formal evenings. For everything else, I keep it practical and pretty—and I don’t feel bad about it one bit.

Entertaining season doesn’t have to mean chaos in the kitchen. It’s about smart choices, thoughtful details, and making sure you get to enjoy the celebration, too.
